2. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Identify and select the appropriate tree species when installing an orchard.
2. Learn and apply the fruit tree reproduction methods examined in the course.
3. Recognize problems that may arise during the production of horticultural products of evergreen fruit trees
4. Identify and select the appropriate variety of evergreen fruit trees when planting an orchard.
5. Understand the cultivation techniques that can be applied in an orchard of evergreen fruits.
6. Design, install and manage an orchard.
7. Suggest solutions on the particular problems that occur in each species of evergreen fruit during the production process.
8. Identify and apply the criteria of maturity/ripening and harvest of evergreen fruits.

General Competences


• Acquire significant theoretical and technical background concerning the field of crop production on Agriculture Science.
• Creatively utilize scientific knowledge and modern technology for the development and care of all types of plant crops as well as the production and marketing of plant material.
• Develop necessary background knowledge to be able to attend postgraduate studies.
• Be acquainted with the proper application of the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during their undragaduate studies.

3. SYLLABUS

In detail, the species examined in the course are:
I. Main species of citrus in Greece (orange tree, lemon tree, mandarin tree, grapefruit tree)
II. Other species of citrus fruits (lime, citrus sp., frappe, kumquat)
III. Olive tree

During the course will be examined the following sections for each species of fruit tree:
1. Origin and geographical distribution of each cultivation
2. Morphological characteristics
3. Soil-climatic requirements
4. Propagation and grafting techniques
6. Pollination, fruit maturity/ripening and modern harvesting methods
7. Physiological disorders and diseases
8. Description of the main varieties and rootstocks
9. Nutrition, fertilization, irrigation and pruning techniques
10. Modern orchard planting systems

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION • For the theoretical part of the course:
Final written or oral examination (60%) in the middle and at the end of the semester (in the middle of semester the written exam is optional)
The written final examination of the theory includes:
a) Multiple choice questionnaires
b) Short-answer questions
c) Comparative evaluation of theory.

• For the laboratory practice:
Written or oral examination at the end of the semester (40%). The laboratory test includes:
a) Multiple choice questionnaires
b) Short-answer questions
c) Problem solving
