2. LEARNING OUTCOMES
Learning Outcomes |

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to understand: Morphology and anatomy of vine parts and their utilization in productive Viticulture. Annual vegetative cycle, phenological stages and their physiological background. Establishment of vineyard and the parameters that affect it. Importance of training systems and winter pruning and their utilization in the viticultural practice. |

Search, analysis and synthesis of data and information, using the necessary technologies individual task Work in teams and make decisions Promotion of free, creative and inductive thinking - have the theoretical and practical background concerning the knowledge field of the science of Agriculture and the plant production process - have the possibility of the creative utilization of scientific knowledge and modern technology for the development of all kinds of plant crops as well as the production and marketing of plant reproductive material - have acquired the necessary cognitive background to enable their access to postgraduate studies - be able to properly apply their theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the period of studies. |
3. SYLLABUS
i. INTRODUCTION (Origin – Viticulture in Ancient Greece. Vine contribution to the appearance of the agricultural landscape and environmental protection - Viticulture in Greece and worldwide – Grape varieties – Planted areas and viticultural products - Difficulties and prospects of the Greek vineyard) ii. VINE MORPHOLOGY AND ANATOMY Root-shoot-leaves- tendrils – inflorescence – flower – grape cluster – berry – pedicel – seed (origin, role, morphology, anatomy) – Vine buds – apical meristem – shoot/cane buds (anatomy, fertility, discrimination and evaluation of dormant buds) iii. ANNUAL VEGETATIVE CYCLE INTRODUCTION- bud burst (bleeding-phenology-dormant and lateral buds burst of shoots and canes)- growth-differentiation of shoots-leaf fall-dormancy. iv. ESTABLISHMENT OF PRODUCTIVE VINEYARD Introduction-climate- bioclimatic indices-viticulture and climate change-soil properties-variety and rootstock choice-planning a productive vineyard-replanted vineyard- spatial conformation- pillars-planting. v. VINE PRUNING Introduction- pruning and training systems-leaf area characteristics, criteria- methodology and training techniques-winter pruning and its role to bud burst and vine productivity-general principles of pruning- selection criteria for different pruning systems-Arm replacement- Main training systems in Greece. |
