2. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide students with specialized knowledge in order to understand the practical applications of authorities of genetics in the creation of new more yielded varieties of cultivated plants with high quality and friendlier to the environment, to apprehend the techniques of classic breeding which are used for creating new varieties, understand the applications of biotechnology in the plant breeding
On successful completion of this module the students will be able to:
1. Know the breeding methods of self pollinated plants
2. Know the breeding methods of cross pollinated plants
3. Understand the role of the environment in plant breeding
4. Know about the role of mutants in plant breeding
5. Know about the role of poloploidism in plant breeding
6. Understand the importance of the resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses variety
7. Know about the role of biotechnology in plant breeding

General Competences


-They have the theoretical and practical background concerning the knowledge field of the science of Agriculture and the process of plant production - they have the ability to creatively utilize scientific knowledge and modern technology for the development and care of all kinds of plant crops as well as the production and marketing of plant reproductive material - they have acquired the necessary knowledge to be able to access post-graduate studies - they are able to properly apply their theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during their studies

• The authorities and the techniques used for the creation of new varieties
• Methods of reproduction of plants, qualitative and quantitative characteristics,
• The role of environment and heritability.
• Methods of plant breeding of self pollinated plants, cross pollinated plants (pedigree method, back cross, recurrent selection)
• Mutation breeding
• Creation of resistant varieties
• Technical polyploidism
• Techniques of biotechnology in plant breeding.
