2. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Know the causing agents of crop diseases
2. Know and effectively identify the symptoms caused by the most important pathogens infecting crop plants
3. Know the pathogenesis mechanisms of plant pathogens and plant defense mechanisms
4. Know the transmission manner and the epidemiology of pathogens causing diseases in crop plants
5. Know the means-strategies employed for effective management of crop plant diseases
6. Know about abiotic diseases, physiological and nutrient disorders of crop plants and their management

General Competences

• Acquire significant theoretical and technical background concerning the field of Plant Pathology on Agriculture Science.
• Creatively utilize scientific knowledge and modern technology for effective protection of crop plants against all types of plant diseases (fungal, bacterial, virus), both pre- and post-harvest.
• Develop necessary background knowledge to be able to attend postgraduate studies.
• Be acquainted with the proper application of the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during their under graduate studies.

3. SYLLABUS

In detail, the sections (lecture topics) that will be presented in the course are:
1. Concept of plant disease and related plant pathology terminology
2. Biotic-abiotic causes of plant diseases
3. Fundamental characteristics of plant pathogenic fungi (morphology, physiology, replication, ecology, dissemination, taxonomy)
4. Phases of fungal disease development (pathogenesis mechanisms-epidemiology of fungal diseases)
5. Effect of pathogens in physiological processes of crop plants-symptom manifestation
6. Plant defense mechanisms to resist-avoid pathogen infections
7. Effect of environmental conditions in promoting severity of plant diseases
8. Selected, representative diseases of crop plants caused by Imperfect Fungi, Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, Oomycetes)
9. Prokaryotic microorganisms as plant pathogens (morphology, reproduction, ecology, dissemination, taxonomy, control) and selected diseases caused by plant pathogenic bacteria to crop plants
10. Viruses as plant pathogens (morphology, taxonomy, diagnosis, infection of plants and replication /translocation of viruses)
11. Virus epidemiology and control
12. Principles and methods for managing plant diseases
