2. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learning Outcomes

This module aims to provide students with specialized lexical, grammatical and discourse elements in the target language in order to help them comprehend scientific and authentic texts (e.g. scientific writings and magazines, reference material etc.) in the field of Agriculture. Students will develop the necessary linguistic skills for their future professional career or participation in postgraduate courses and various European programmes (e.g. Erasmus). They will be exposed to a variety of Agriculture -related texts focusing on content rather than grammar and they will practice their skills through exercises.
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
1. Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
2. Use English scientific writings and magazines in the field of Agriculture
3. Identify lexical, grammatical and discourse items in formal ESP written and listening texts
4. Demonstrate comprehension of ESP texts by activating previously acquired knowledge in the field of Agriculture and the language system (e.g. making inferences about the meaning of new words from the context in which they occur and word order, distinguishing what is important for one’s own purposes of reading and skip what is not etc.)
5. Apply knowledge of the function of specific and specialized grammatical and lexical items in ESP texts in a variety of exercises (e.g. exercises practicing reading skills and critical thinking - dual-choice questions, multiple choice, information-transfer, cloze, multiple matching, topic elaboration etc.)
6. Interpret and analyze information in diagrams, tables, manuals etc.
