2. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Write and name the main organic compounds.
2. Recognize the main bonds of organic compounds and the main properties arising from their structural features
3. Recognize the main groups of organic biomines and their properties
4. Know the basic laboratory techniques applied in organic chemistry while applying the above theoretical knowledge.

3. SYLLABUS

• Chemical bonds, Atomic and Molecular Orbitals, Resonance
• Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, sulfur compounds, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, heterocyclic compounds (nomenclature, properties, synthesis, use)
• Aromaticity, conjugate-induction phenomenon.
• Stereochemistry and stereoisomerism.
• Structural Biochemistry: Lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, proteins (enzymes), nucleotides, nucleic acids

I. Written final exam (50%) consisting of the following:
- Multiple choice questions
- Short answer questions
- Right/ Error Questions
II. Practical Exercise/Skill evaluation (15%)
III. A short weekly oral test of theoretical and laboratory knowledge (15%)
IV. Final Written Laboratory Knowledge Test (20%)
