2. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learning Outcomes

The purpose of the course is through information, research, critical discussion and improvement of self-awareness, for the students to develop abilities to interpret, study and handle specialized and modern management issues related to both agricultural production and trade, services and the processed products of the countryside, with special emphasis on their economic dimension. In this context, students are provided with knowledge from four scientific fields that correspond to the five specific topics – modules that the course includes: Precision Agriculture, Quality Management, Contract Agriculture, Rural Tourism and Trade Legislation for Agri-Food Products.
In particular, the first module aims to introduce and introduce the student to Precision Agriculture and familiarize him/her with new technological methods and tools used mainly in the production and organization of agricultural holdings.
The second section includes knowledge related to Administration and Quality Management in the production and distribution of agri-food products. This section examines quality system standards and analyzes procedures for quality management, system certification and total quality management.
The third section refers to Contract Agriculture and aims to provide new knowledge regarding the organization of the marketing of agricultural products and its modern forms, as they develop in a dynamic, globalized, socio-economic environment.
The fourth section examines the alternative forms of rural tourism that develop in the rural area and mainly Agritourism. This section analyzes the theoretical framework for the development of these activities, and provides knowledge related to the policies and funding sources that support them, the agritourism product, the types of agritourism accommodations and services, and the management of agritourism businesses and resources.
In the fifth section, selected topics from the broad field of Legislation for the Trade of Agri-Food Products are studied. This section introduces the basic concepts and fundamental elements of the legislative framework governing the marketing of agri-food products on the domestic and international market. The study is further specialized in the overview of the special regulations that govern the marketing of the products of specific branches of the agri-food sector. The focus is on PDO - PGI - EPIP products, fresh and processed fruit and vegetables, alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, distilled spirits, spirits), aromatic-medicinal plants, olive oil and table olives.

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Recognize and understand the basic concepts and principles used in Precision Agriculture.
2. Become familiar with new technological methods and tools of Precision Agriculture that are used to solve problems mainly in the production and organization of agricultural holdings.
3. Recognize and understand the basic principles and parameters related to the concepts of Administration and Quality Management in the production and distribution of agricultural products and food.
4. Understand the basic features and importance of quality system standards, quality management procedures, quality system certification procedures and total quality management procedures.
5. Recognize and understand the basic concepts and principles used in Contract Agriculture.
6. Be able to perceive the current reality and important parameters in the organization of the marketing of agricultural products and food and its modern forms, based on the knowledge of the past and the most recent developments, as they develop in a dynamic, globalized, socio-economic environment.
7. Recognize and understand the basic concepts and principles related to the alternative forms of rural tourism that develop in the rural area and especially Agritourism.
8. Analyze the theoretical framework for the development of these activities and to understand the basic characteristics and importance of: the policies and funding sources that support them, the agritourism product, the various types of agritourism accommodations and services and the management of agritourism businesses and resources.
9. Have acquired the necessary knowledge about the principles and basic regulations of the legislation for the marketing of agri-food products in the domestic and international market.
10. Recognize the particular importance of the current requirements of legislation (regulations, restrictions, non-tariff measures, trade barriers, duties, fees, etc.) for the marketing of products in specific sectors of the agri-food sector, such as products PDO - PGE - EPIP, fresh and processed fruit and vegetables, alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, distilled spirits, spirits), aromatic-medicinal plants, olive oil and table olives.

Individual learning objectives of the course are the students upon its successful completion:
1. To be able to recognize the various dimensions in the practice of Precision Agriculture, its tools and processes.
2. Understand the importance of Geographic Information Systems and maps in precision agriculture.
3. To recognize the most important Quality System Standards, Quality Management techniques and procedures.
4. To understand the operation and procedures of Certification Systems and Total Quality Management.
5. To understand the concept and parameters of Contract Agriculture and
6. To recognize its effects on the agricultural sector and the national economy.
7. To recognize the various forms of Alternative Rural Tourism and the natural and cultural resources to be exploited.
8. To recognize and analyze the defining parameters of Agritourism and its cultural dimension.
9. To recognize the main characteristics of the main Agritourism Businesses and Services.
10. Understand and analyze Agritourism policies and strategies – sources of funding.
11. To understand the basic principles and parameters in the management of Agritourism Businesses.
12. To understand the legal risks to which businesses are exposed by not complying with the requirements of the legislation for the marketing of agri-food products.
13. To be able to solve the main interpretative problems in the requirements of the legislation for the trade of specific agri-food products, combining national, European and international regulations and taking into account the relationship between legal rules, scientific data and technical rules.
14. To acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge to find solutions in the management of legal risk and to limit the exposure of businesses trading agri-food products to legal liability.

General Competences

Graduates upon obtaining the degree will:
- have the theoretical and practical background of the science of Agriculture and in particular the scientific fields of Agricultural Economy, Agricultural Policy and Rural Development.
- have the ability to creatively use and synthesize their scientific knowledge for the business utilization and development of the agri-food sector market.
- have the ability to search, analyze and synthesize data and information, using the appropriate modern technologies.
- are able to deal with the processes that contribute to the development and promotion of the marketing of agricultural products and food.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION The evaluation procedure includes written examination, oral presentation of works, written works.

1. Elaboration of an exercise (10%)
Each student is required to prepare an individual exercise based on the study of a scientific/research article, related to the subjects of the first five units/weekly lectures. After the student writes a summary text according to a model, he/she presents the exercise and submits it for evaluation by the teacher until the end of the 6th week.

2. Paper Writing – Case Study (30%)
Each student is required to prepare an individual assignment. The student chooses to delve deeper into a problem or phenomenon, area, company, product, etc., according to the suggestions and questions of one of the assignments at the end of each unit/lecture (brief - guided by questions - case study ). The student undertakes to prepare the work under the guidance of the teacher, present it and submit it for evaluation by the end of the 12th week. The elaboration and presentation of work before the end of the semester is estimated at 30% of the total final grade.

3. Written final theory exam (60%)
The final written exam of the theory is estimated at 60% of the total final grade and carried out after the completion of the teaching, according to the relevant rules of the School and during the examination periods officially determined by the University.
Students are asked to answer ten out of thirteen questions, which include:
- Multiple choice questions.
- Short answer questions.
- Comparative evaluation of theory elements.

The evaluation criteria are specified in the course guide that is distributed by the professor at the beginning of the semester to the students and is also available in electronic form on the e-class e-learning platform.
- It is done in writing, according to the relevant rules of the School.
